Joining City of Sydney Library: an online application still needs an identity check

City of Sydney Library separates using its spaces from becoming a borrowing member. Its joining page also separates the online application from a visit to confirm identity. For a new resident or visitor, those distinctions are more useful than assuming an online form completes every part of registration.

This is a local service guide based on council pages checked on 20 October 2026. No application was submitted and no individual membership was approved during this research.

Start with what you want to do

The council says community members can use library spaces, services and physical collections without membership. Joining provides additional access, including borrowing and online collections from home. That does not establish that every service has identical conditions or that a particular digital title will be available.

Our editorial suggestion is to name the immediate task before opening the form: reading at a branch, borrowing a physical item or accessing a digital collection remotely. Ask about that task rather than treating a library card as a universal pass for every activity.

Prepare for the second step

The official joining instructions say to apply online, then visit a branch and provide identity evidence. They allow physical or digital identification and provide examples of identity and address documents. The page also says a parent or guardian must attend with an applicant under 16.

Keep application details available for the branch visit. Avoid publishing identity documents or putting them into a public comment. For an unusual address situation, ask the library which membership route applies; this article does not decide whether someone’s evidence is sufficient.

Keep the membership term out of an assumption

This guide does not specify a visitor expiry period. Confirm the membership type and the actual expiry shown on the account with the library, particularly if borrowing will continue after leaving Sydney. The identity-confirmation step and the length of access are separate questions.

Keep the registration record practical

  • Record the intended library task and the membership type confirmed by staff.
  • Retain the expiry date shown on the actual account after registration.
  • Check the borrowing conditions for the item or service you will use.
  • Keep the branch’s answer with its date, rather than reusing another visitor’s experience.

These are organisational suggestions, not additional council requirements. We have not tested catalogue reservations, activated remote access or checked branch opening hours. Confirm those details through the council before making a time-sensitive journey.
